A Flute in My Refrigerator Celebrating a Life in Music Helen Spielman 9780615799872 Books

Written from the heart, A Flute in My Refrigerator Celebrating a Life in Music illuminates one woman's deeply personal experience as a musician. The stories, correspondence, and interviews abound with treasures uncovered when love and passion guide a life. The narrative is rich with the joy, struggle, and fullness of her journey as a music teacher, adult learner, performer, and seeker of growth through music.
Author Helen Spielman did not seek a life in music, but found herself taking four teenagers on a flute trip to London, observing Sir James Galway record a CD at Abbey Roads Studios, and concertizing in a prison. Through her beautiful, touching, and sometimes hilarious tales, readers will discover deeper layers of humanity within themselves.

A Flute in My Refrigerator Celebrating a Life in Music Helen Spielman 9780615799872 Books Reviews
"A Flute in My Refrigerator" is a warm, heartfelt, moving and at times humorous account of Helen's earlier career as a flute teacher. She recounts warm memories of lessons taught to her students and learned from her students as well as experiences as a student and performer herself. This should be required reading for flute students and teachers alike.
"I marvel at your intuitive understanding of your students, teachers, and collaborative musicians and your ability to find the best in them and make your stories shine. Your quick “reading” of each person in the book, the joyful way you interact and the insight into their feelings (and your own) are a marvel to see. So few people in this life have the ability to tap into the unrealized resources inside another human being – like you do at every turn. What a joy! And, you are fun and display fun with these students every chance you get. Your book is a sensational testament to your ability to tap into the soul of each person. I am loving every word! This book is an invitation into your lovely soul.” - B. McLean
I had the great pleasure of reading many of these delightful essays before Helen Spielman put them all together in this entertaining book. After reading an essay about a particular flutist, I often looked up his or her work and listened to it, which gave me a new and lasting love of flute music. For much of my life I've been a classical music lover--particularly of opera--but had never spent a lot of time listening to flute music...that changed after I read Helen's essays, and I'll be forever grateful to her for opening that venue to me. I recommend this book to anyone with a love of music and particularly to those who'd like to learn more about flutes and the special music they make.
Excellent book. Great encouragement for amateur musicians and teachers giving private lessons
This little book is a gem--easy to pick up and read for just a few minutes at a time, coming away with a smile and a new appreciation for the creation of music and the mind of a performer. I listen differently now to musical soloists of any instrument, including voice.
What a nice inspiring book, that reminds me of my teaching days.
Well written, enjoyable, personable, engaging! Wonderful for both teachers and students. Her anecdotes are personal but not too much so, and give insights into famous personalities as well as her wonderful flute studio and performance workshops.
